World Water Day, March 22, 2012

"World Water Day is held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of water and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources."

The above is a direct quote from the UN Food and Agriculture brochure that goes on as follows:

"The world is thirsty because of our needs for food. Today, there are over 7 billion people to feed on the planet and this number is expected to reach 9 billion by 2050. To be able to feed everybody, we first need to secure water, in sufficient quantity and adequate quality. We will also need to produce more food using less water, reduce food wastage and losses, and move towards more sustainable diets."

Our first water project was established in the barrio of Maria Auxiliadora and it has been self-sustaining for over 4 years now. It produces between 20,000 and 25,000 gallons per day that are sold in 5 gallon jugs at about one-third the market price, making water more accessible to poorer people. It has had a  major impact on the lives of those in this barrio.

Partners in Deed is developing its second water project in the Dominican Republic that will bring purified water to a community of Haitians and Dominicans living in the barrio of Soto who at this time do not have access to clean water services for drinking and cooking. It will supply water from a well and be distributed in five-gallon jugs. The result will be improved health and quality of life for this underprivileged community, many of whom are refugees from Haiti.

You can help the Soto Water Project by donating to Partners In Deed through our web site at www.partnersindeed.org. Just click on the donate tab and follow the links. Once on the Canada Helps web site, select 'Soto Water Project' from the drop-down menu.

Also, pass this blog on to your friends and family.
